Haven Volunteers
Sonshine Haven could not exist without our wonderfully dedicated volunteers! Let us introduce you to one of those special people:
Mrs. Joanne Getter
Our Sonshine kids know her as their “sewing teacher” for Life skill classes
The staff knows her as a volunteer that is truly dedicated, faithful, dependable and always willing to fill any Haven need!
Over 3 years ago Ms Mari met Joanne during a Bible study. When Mari learned Joanne was a Home Economics teacher at Crawford High School, Mari shared her need for a sewing instructor for Life Skill classes. Joanne thought she would like to do that, as long as she didn’t have to work with young children!! Little did she know what God had planned for her! After meeting the children, she was hooked.
One of her favorite memories is with a little boy learning about the parts of his sewing machine. When he would ask Ms Joanne about how to use his “kick stand” she would try to turn the conversation away from bicycles and back to sewing machines. After much frustration she learned his “kick stand” was the “pressure foot”!
Joanne is now retired after 32 years of teaching at Crawford High School in San Diego
She was born in Independence Missouri and grew up in Hawaii, Graduated from Kearny High in San Diego and continued on to SDSU, Received a Major in Home Economics and minor in Soc Studies/Art.
When she isn’t busy with the Haven, Joanne enjoys shopping and finding amazing bargains for our Mom’s Night Out events and Auction items for our annual benefit. Of course she finds some time to spend with her wonderful husband Al and four legged baby Sheena (in the picture!)
Volunteer opportunities:
• Summer Life Skill classes
• Camp check out
• Cinderella/fella Day
